Last Blast Canceled

Hey Everyone,

After much deliberation between the youth and clergy, we are going to have to cancel this Sunday’s Last Blast.

Unfortunately, we have received too little participation between both youth and leaders in order to pull off our last meeting.

However, on behalf of all the youth leaders, I would like to thank you for your continued support, cooperation and patience during these past few months, and we look forward to seeing you all again this fall under the guidance of our new Youth Minister!

In the meantime, we hope you have a great end of the school year and a wonderful summer. If you ever need anything, please do not hesitate to contact any of us. All of the EYC leaders’ contact information can be found on the Youth Blog.

Palm Sunday Pancake Success!

The Rite-13 Teachers and Youth Group Leaders would like to thank all the 6th and 7th graders who came out and helped make this year’s Pancake Breakfast a huge success! We raised over $400 for Peter Paul Development Center and put on a great breakfast for our parish!

Last EYC Meeting THIS Sunday May 1st!

Hello all!

Can you believe that this coming Sunday is the last day of our program year?! Which means, not only is it your last day of Sunday School, but it will also be our last Youth Group meeting until the fall.

To celebrate, we are inviting ALL Youth Groups, 6-12th grades, to come celebrate in our “Last Blast” out on the median of Monument between the Robert E. Lee and JEB Stuart statues.

We will all meet at St. James’s and walk down to the median together.

There we will enjoy great food, music, cornhole, and a few other activities.

We understand that this time of year is crazy busy for all of our youth, so we’re offering this as a relaxing escape to hang out with your friends and enjoy our last activity together.

This will also be your last opportunity to ask any of the youth leaders about this summer’s urban adventure mission trip if you’re interested as the deadline to sign up is quickly approaching!

We will meet from 4-5:30 pm

Please RSVP by FRIDAY Apriil 29th so we can be sure to order enough food for everyone. Also, if you have any outdoor games like boccie ball we can borrow, please let Sarah Lisk know as by email (slisk29@gmail.com).

If you’d like to bring a towel or blanket to sit on, or your iPod to play through the boom box, feel free!

Palm Sunday Pancake Breakfast THIS Sunday April 17th!

6th & 7th grade youth and parents,

Thanks to you that have responded already about participating in this year’s pancake breakfast preparation. Unfortunately, we’ve only heard from a handful of people and the day is quickly approaching! The pancake breakfast is something that the whole parish looks forward to every year and it is all thanks to your participation! Now is the time to come out and have some fun while making pancakes (and eating them too!).

To remind you of the details:

Palm Sunday is THIS SUNDAY April 17th!!!
Your teachers and Youth Group leaders will be at the church by 7:30 a.m. We would like for the 6th/7th graders to meet us in Valentine Hall in the Michaux House by 7:45 a.m. to start with the food preparation. (Parents: we will have coffee made for those of you who want to hang around while the kids are cooking.)
We will serve breakfast from 8:30 to 9:30. We then need to make sure Valentine Hall and the kitchen get CLEAN! We’ll try to get everything finished by 10:00 so you can walk up the street to join the parade procession if you are interested.

Please let us know as soon as possible if you are able to participate!

Greetings, Everybody!

I am sad to say that my time with St. James’s youth program is drawing to close. While I will be around on Sunday mornings singing in the choir until March 20, this Sunday, February 6, will be my last Sunday as St. James’s Youth Minister.

We are going to have a pre-Super Bowl party for ALL 6th-12th grade youth this Sunday afternoon, February 6, from 4:00-6:00 p.m. in the Youth Lounge in the basement of Michaux House. This will be my last youth group with you guys, so I’d love to get a chance to see as many of you as possible on Sunday. We will have dinner together and will make ice cream sundaes afterward. No need to bring anything — just show up and hang out!

If you plan to come on Sunday afternoon (and I hope you will), please drop me a quick email or give me a call and let me know so we can be sure to have enough food.

I look forward to enjoying one last youth group with you all. See you Sunday!

Youth Sunday: Notes for Sunday, January 30

Youth Sunday 2011 has arrived!

Preaching, reading, officiating, ushering….this Sunday at 9:00 a.m., it will all be done by YOU, St. James’s middle and high school youth. AND…we will have the 7th grade Rite-13 Ceremony in the middle of the 9:00 a.m. service, as well. It is a morning to celebrate all that St. James’s youth have to offer – what a blessing!

A few notes:

1. The roster of duties is below — thanks to all those who volunteered!

2. Usher team: please meet in the narthex (inside the front doors of the church) no later than 8:40 a.m. Sunday morning to receive instructions.

3. 7th Graders and Parents: Sit on the front LEFT side of the church. Pews will be reserved for you. Please try to be in your seats by 8:45 a.m.

4. 6th, 8th, and 9th Graders: Please sit together with your class and teachers on the RIGHT side of the church near the front. Pews will be reserved for you.

5. ALL youth Sunday school classes will attend the Adult Forum this Sunday. Paris Ball, the Director of Christian Formation for the Diocese of Virginia, will be talking about Shrine Mont Summer Camps. Please come directly to the Parkinson Room (in the undercroft of the church) – no need to go to your classrooms first.

I hope you will all join us for the 9:00 service; even if you don’t have an active role in the liturgy, come be present and let the parish celebrate you and your gifts!

Several important announcements for this Sunday, January 23, so read closely!

Morning:

- 7th Graders: your class will meet in the church during Sunday school on Sunday morning. I will be with you guys to talk about and rehearse the Rite-13 Ceremony that will take place during the 9:00 service on January 30. Please comes straight to the church for Sunday school.

Afternoon:

- Middle School Youth Groups (Rite-13/J2A – 6th, 7th, 8th grades) will go Ice Skating this Sunday afternoon from 2:00-3:30. We’re going to try the new downtown rink called “RVA on Ice” in front of CenterStage (6th and Broad). We will meet AT THE RINK at 2:00 p.m., and pickup will be at the rink at 3:30 p.m. All 6th-8th graders welcome!

- High School EYC Youth Group will meet in the Youth Lounge at 4:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon. We’ll get something to eat, then head over to the Science Museum for an IMAX movie at 5:00. We will be back to the church by 6:00 p.m.

It would be most helpful if you could shoot me a quick email and let me know if you plan to come to these events Sunday afternoon. We hope to see you there!

Youth Sunday + Rite-13 Ceremony: January 30, 2011

Mark your calendars: St. James’s annual Youth Sunday service and Rite-13 Ceremony are both coming up on Sunday, January 30!

This will be an important Sunday for all of our 6th-12th graders at St. James’s. On Youth Sunday, almost all of the leadership roles for the 9:00 a.m. service — officiating, preaching, reading, ushering, acolyting, etc. — will be done by our youth.

In addition, the Rite-13 Ceremony celebrating our 7th Grade Class will take place in the middle of the 9:00 service, as well. All 7th graders and their parents will be seated on the left side of the church for the Rite-13 Ceremony. All other middle and high school youth who do not have a role in the service will be seated together by class on the right side of the church in front of the pulpit.

We would love to find a role for all of our youth who want to participate in Youth Sunday! The roles we need to fill – along with the number of people needed – are listed below. Please email me and let me know what you might be interested in doing for the service.

We need:

Officiants (lead the service) – 1 or 2
Lectors (read lessons) – 3 or 4
Ushers (pass out bulletins, take up collection) – 10
Acolytes – Team 6 is scheduled

Please consider signing up for one of these roles and contact me with your preference!

Community Service and Tacky Lights

Attention all 8th Graders and High Schoolers!

Two events coming up – a reminder about one, an announcement about the other:

OUTREACH/COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECT
Peter Paul Development Center Christmas Party
Saturday, December 18
Noon – 4:00 p.m.

Each December, St. James’s youth gather the Christmas gifts collected by St. James’s Giving Tree ministry and delivers them to the families at the Peter Paul Development Center in the East End. We provide the food for the party, help the younger kids with some Christmas-themed crafts, and organize the distribution of gifts.

The party is this SATURDAY, December 18. We will meet at the church at noon in Michaux House on Saturday to load up the gifts, then we’ll take the church van to Peter Paul. We should be back to St. James’s by 4:00.

We could use your help – please let me know if you can join us!!! We ask that participants bring some baked goods to contribute to the party (cookies, cake, brownies, etc.). The Peter Paul Christmas Party is a great opportunity for outreach and community service at a very appropriate time of the year!

All 8th-12th Graders welcome!

CHRISTMAS “TACKY LIGHT” TOUR

Several of you have asked if we will be doing a Tacky Light Tour for you guys this year. We are happy to take a group if people are interested. We’ve reserved the church vans for next Monday night, December 20, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Please email me or call me if you are interested in joining us so we can save you a space (seating is limited). We will meet in the church parking deck at 10 minutes to 6:00 on Monday night.

Again, all 8th-12th Graders welcome!
